You ever pulled half the legs off a spider, you know, to see if it's still crawling around? Or bury a dog up to its head in the ground, see if it'll eat the dirt to get out of the hole? Pour paraffin over a parakeet to see if it'll fly twice as fast to put out the flames? Well, I have. All of them, and a lot more besides. The parakeet was my little sister's. My momma caught me setting fire to it, and it was quite a family to-do. Not surprisingly, I guess. My daddy wanted to send me to the shrink but my momma wouldn't let him. Instead, she bought me a beautiful little kitten. She made me totally responsible for it. I had to feed it, worm it, pay for its vet bills, all that kind of stuff. She figured it'd teach me the value of life over death, and I guess it kinda did. That little cat meant the world to me, and I looked after it like it was my own little baby. While I never hurt that cat, it didn't stop me from messing with other animals. Just made me better at hiding it from my folks.

"I shouldn't be enjoying myself right now. Believe me, I really wish I didn't have to be here, now. But I gotta tell you, right now, I'm feeling like a little kid in a toy store again. And boy, you better believe me when I say, when I was a kid, I wasn't very nice."
NATE is a drifter. A former soldier and interrogator, honorably discharged from Iraq, and good enough at his job to have been tapped for further governmental work. Has a younger sister. Speaks with a southern drawl.

Generally soft-spoken and well-mannered, until given reason not to be. Lacks any real scruples when it comes to collateral damage, though not utterly without principles.

(When someone he cares about goes missing, he methodically tracks down and kills the man responsible, as well as his accomplices. He tortures each of them for information as well as for what they've done, and confesses to enjoying the process despite the circumstances.)

That said, he is not incapable of forming connections with others, and is fiercely loyal and protective if/when it happens.
